All Saints' Church vegetable garden photos.
Since 2003 members of All Saints' Church have grown assorted vegetables (e.g.: peas, squash, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, parsnips, carrots, beans, zucchini, cucumbers) and donated the harvest to the Chelmsford Food Pantry for distribution to those in need. Last summer, the garden lay fallow. Although this may have given the soil a rest, it didn’t help in getting people fed.
This year we’d like to get the garden up and running again. Our younger parishioners have already started the process. On Palm Sunday, the Sunday school students planted seeds for our garden in seed pots. Many of these seedlings went home with the gardeners, where they will stay until the seedlings get large enough for transplanting into the garden.
We will begin preparing the planting beds and sowing frost hardy plants (peas) in late March. Preparation of beds will continue over the next few months, and the seedlings will be planted when the weather turns milder. We are trying to employ the old adage "Many hands make light work". We need people to volunteer for three hours of work on one of three Saturdays:
On these Saturdays we will operating from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Arrive when it is convenient and plan to work for no more than 3 hours; although, with enough volunteers it may take significantly less time. Please feel free to bring a picnic lunch and something to drink, although we will have water available.
Throughout the summer, we need families & individuals to sign up to help maintain the garden (i.e. watering and weeding) and to pick the vegetables and take them to the Chelmsford Food Pantry. We are asking for volunteers to choose a 2 hour slot on either a weekend or a Thursday through the summer (7 June - 5 October 2008). We encourage you sign-up for multiple slots, if you are able.
Two open house orientation weekends are scheduled for 3 & 17 May 2008 On these dates volunteers are invited to come to the garden any time between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. In fact everyone is invited, volunteer or not. The Garden Gate is Open to All!
Sign-up sheets can be found in the Narthex, at Coffee Hour and in the hands of wandering organizers: Harry Taplin, Pamela Landi or Laura Marshall.
